Why My House Burned Down

Yesterday, before my first day at my new job, my dad told me a story:

A guy gets shipwrecked on this island. He's alone and completely cut off from the world. He struggles for a long time, trying to figure out how to live. He finds food and shelter and learns to support himself. He works out a comfortable life for himself, one where he can survive. Then one night there is a storm; the wind whips up and starts a fire in his hut. The fire takes hold quickly and destroys his entire house, all his food stores and even the few things he had kept from the shipwreck. He stood there in the storm, watching his house burn and he was completely devastated. He had nothing. Less than nothing. The next morning he woke up to someone shaking him. "Hey. How long have you been here?" The person asked. "Luckily I saw your signal fire last night and was able to find you. Let's get you home."

My dad wished me good luck, and said he hoped I might figure out why my hut burned down. He said maybe I never would know why. But everything happens for a reason. I can't wait to find out. I do know this new place feels pretty good.

Thank you to all of you who prayed for me. It helped.

Hey MRM. How are things going. I have a book that you need to read. Its called a long way gone. It is about a child solider from Sierra Leone. All the incoming freshmen for utah state had to read it, and after we read it, we discussed and then we got to meet the author and hear him speak to us. You would really enjoy it and it would be perfect for your classes. email me and we can discuss it and i can give you more info if you want it. kaylee.sandstrom@hotmail.com

Also i have to tell you that you have inspired me in a way. i loved your soc class so much that i am currently taking sociology and i am facinated. I am in the process of changing my major to scoiology with and photography minor. i really love the study of why people do things and why people are categorized into such groups. i love the study of race, class, and gender. It is amazing that we put people into certain categories becuase of their social status, skin color or their heritage. You have really inspired me and made me want to know more about soc. Thanks you for everything, and keep me posted on the new job and life. Kaylee Sandstrom
